Experience Shows Anti-Spanking Laws do More Harm than Good

By Tim Waggoner WELLINGTON, NZ, June 23, 2008 (LifeSiteNews.com) - A police review shows that New Zealand's new anti-spanking law has not reduced the number of physical abuse cases against children, but it has deterred good parents from properly disciplining their children. (more)

Promoting the 'trendy' sin of homosexuality

From OneNews Now:
WTTW in Chicago is at least partially funded by taxpayer dollars. The PBS affiliate has broadcast the documentary The Power of Harmony at least twice as a fundraiser. Peter LaBarbera, president of Illinois-based Americans for Truth About Homosexuality, describes the program. "This was a show about a 'gay' choir," says LaBarbera. "And one of the songs they were singing was called, 'I Ain't Afraid.' And here's [some] of the lyrics: 'I ain't afraid of your Jesus. I'm afraid of what you do in the name of your God.'" The documentary, which features the Dallas-based singing group The Turtle Creek Chorale, takes "an intimate look" at issues such as "coming out," same-sex "marriage," religious views on homosexuality, and homosexual adoption, says the program's website. In addition, according to LaBarbera, the documentary portrays as "ignorant, hateful, and prejudiced" Christians who hold to the biblical edict that all sex outside of marriage, including all homosexual activity, is immoral. "They had no Christians representing a biblical framework [or] the idea that you can love 'gay' people, but they need to change and leave the lifestyle," the pro-family activist explains. "There was nothing presented of the ex-gay view, [from] people who've come to Christ and left homosexuality."

Why NATO Must Win in Afghanistan: A Central Front in the War on Terrorism

From Heritage.org:
Jonathan Evans, director general of Britain's security service MI5 describes al-Qaeda and its associated groups as, "the main national security threat that we face today."[1] Through a series of attacks and attempted attacks, Islamist extremists have declared war on the values that underpin the liberal democracies of Britain, Europe, and the entire West. In an extraordinary public speech, Mr. Evans detailed a growing and evolving al-Qaeda threat to the United Kingdom, where at least2,000 individuals have been identified as a threat to national security because of their support for terrorism. He went on to identify the increased threats posed by the "extension of the al-Qaeda brand" in both the Middle East and Europe.[2] ...(More)

Doormat Theology

From A Slice of Infinity:
The life of a Christ-follower is to be marked by putting the interests of others on par with our own interests. Moreover, our lives are to be marked by viewing others as more important than ourselves. More important than ourselves. If we seek to follow Jesus in this way, we can expect for others to take advantage of our willingness to serve. Indeed, in calling us to offer our lives for others, we are called to practice “doormat theology”--the willing practice of laying down our lives on behalf of others--even when that service is abused or misused. Yellow Science

Great article over at First Things:
...Nevertheless, over the last several decades an increasing number of scientists have shed the restraints imposed by the scientific method and begun to proclaim the truth of man-made global warming. This is a hypothesis that remains untested, makes no predictions that can be tested in the near future, and cannot offer a numerical explanation for the limited evidence to which it clings. No equations have been shown to explain the relationship between fossil-fuel emission and global temperature. The only predictions that have been made are apocalyptic, so the hypothesis has to be accepted before it can be tested.
The only evidence that can be said to support this so-called scientific consensus is the supposed correlation of historical global temperatures with historical carbon-dioxide content in the atmosphere. Even if we do not question the accuracy of our estimates of global temperatures into previous centuries, and even if we ignore the falling global temperatures over the past decade as fossil-fuel emissions have continued to increase, an honest scientist would still have to admit that the hypothesis of man-made global warming hardly rises to the level of “an assertion of what has been or would be the result of carrying out a specified observational procedure.” Global warming may or may not be “the greatest scam in history,” as it was recently called by John Coleman, a prominent meteorologist and the founder of the Weather Channel. Certainly, however, under the scientific method it does not rise to the level of an “item of physical knowledge.”

Alley Cats of the Left

What fascism looks like from the Spectator:
Huffington continues:
There are not two valid sides to issues like global warming or health care. We can argue about what to do, but unless you are crazy or a liar, you can't honestly claim that the drug and insurance companies aren't an obstacle to public health...or that global warming is a fraud and then demand equal time to spout some nonsense that gains an aura of legitimacy from the "let's hear from both sides" approach of the news media.See the thuggish brown shirt tactics here? They want to shower conservatives with name calling, then smear them with allegations that their arguments are made in bad faith, and then demand that they even be excluded from public debate. This is not a discussion of ideas, it is all a purely ad hominem attack. Huffington's book should have been entitled Winning Through Intimidation

Sen. Obama's beliefs about the relationship between politics and religion...

From InsightScoop:
...are of interest to more than a few people and have been under a lot of scrutiny lately. They are also rather inconsistent and heavily biased against religion, writes Dr. Francis Beckwith over on the "What's Wrong With the World" blog, who analyzes a 2006 address given by Sen. Obama and concludes:
He seems to be telling us that in order for religious citizens to fully participate in our democratic regime they must use the language of those who are hostile or indifferent to their faith. Notice that the senator does not say that democracy demands that the secularist translate his policy proposals into the language of theology so that his religious neighbors could be appropriately convinced and thus not be marginalized from the public conversation. For Senator Obama it is a one-way street: the religious citizen must acquiesce at every turn to the rules provided to him by the secularist. And if he objects to this arrangement, he must offer arguments in the language and grammar of the secularist. For Senator Obama, we should, in the words of Jesus, "Give unto Caesar what is Caesar's and given unto God what is God's," but with one small caveat: the authority who has absolute discretion over the two spheres is Caesar, who may only be spoken to in the language of Caesar.(

Teacher Fired for Refusing to Remove Bible from Desk, Allegedly Teaching Religion in Class

MOUNT VERNON, OH, June 24, 2008 (LifeSiteNews.com) - Yesterday, the Mount Vernon Board of Education voted unanimously to terminate the contract of a Mount Vernon Middle School science teacher. John Freshwater has been a teacher at the school for 21 years. Among several questionable allegations, including that of "burning" a cross on a student's arm, the only significant allegation Freshwater admits to, is failing to remove his personal Bible from his classroom desk.
According to Mount Vernon News, the Mount Vernon School Board relied on the report of an independent investigator, H.R. On Call Inc., to pass their resolution to consider the termination of Freshwater's contract. The investigator reported that Freshwater "burnt" what they determined to be a cross, and not an "x" as Freshwater claimed, on a student's arm during a routine science experiment, taught religion in the classroom, refused to remove religious articles from the classroom, and prayed at a Federation of Christian Athlete's (FCA) meeting, which is a Christian student-led group Freshwater advises....(

Prelate: Bible Key for More Than Christianity

LISBON, Portugal, JUNE 24, 2008 (Zenit.org).- The Bible is a cornerstone, not just of Christianity, but of Western civilization, proposed Archbishop Gianfranco Ravasi.
The president of the Pontifical Council for Culture affirmed this in Portugal last Friday, when he gave a talk on "The Bible: The 'Great Code' of Western Culture" at the Portuguese Catholic University.
According to the archbishop, the Bible is present in Western culture "as structural component of the artistic, ethical and social fields."Citing literary critic Northrop Frye, Archbishop Ravasi said that "Scripture is the universe in which Western literature and art acted until the 18th century and, to a great extent, still act."
The prelate suggested three models that represent "this immense influence" of the Bible....(

Dobson Attacks Obama on Abortion

From Townhall:
...Dobson’s segment largely focused on Obama’s 2006 religiously-themed Call to Renewal Speech and took particular issue with Obama’s refusal to support the Born Alive Infant Protection Act as an Illinois State Senator. The bill would have given medical protection to babies who miraculously survived abortion.
Dobson played several audio portions of Obama’s speech, pausing to criticize certain passages. Obama, who maintains he is personally pro-life but has a 100 percent voting record from abortion lobbyists, said, “I may be opposed to abortion for religious reasons, but if I seek to pass a law banning the practice, I cannot simply point to the teachings of my church or evoke God's will. I have to explain why abortion violates some principle that is accessible to people of all faiths, including those with no faith at all.” (

The Ku Klux Klan can march. The Nazis can hand out brochures. Skinheads can do whatever it is that Skinheads do. Roadside bombs decline in Iraq

From USA Today:
WASHINGTON — Roadside bomb attacks and fatalities in Iraq are down by almost 90% over the last year, according to Pentagon records and interviews with military leaders.
In May, 11 U.S. troops were killed by blasts from improvised explosive devices (IEDs) compared with 92 in May 2007, records show. That's an 88% decrease.
Military leaders cite several factors for the drop in attacks and deaths. They include:
•New vehicles. Almost 7,000 heavily armored Mine Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP) vehicles have been rushed to Iraq in the last year. "They've taken hits, many, many hits that would have killed soldiers and Marines in uparmored Humvees," Adm. Michael Mullen, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said in a recent interview.
Defense Secretary Robert Gates made obtaining at least 15,000 MRAPs his top priority last year.
•Iraqi assistance. Ad hoc local security forces, known as the Sons of Iraq, have provided on-the-ground intelligence to U.S. forces looking for IEDs, said Maj. Gen. Rick Lynch, who commanded a division in Baghdad from February 2007 until May.

Editor's Note: In Part I of Annie's Story (http://www.lifesitenews.com/ldn/2008/jun/08061911.html), Bugos told the story of Annie Farlow, a girl who was born with Trisomy 13, and who died at only 80 days of age, devastating her parents and siblings. In Part II Bugos relates the Farlow's experiences, after Annie's passing, with the health-care staff who had cared for their daughter, and the disturbing discoveries they made about the circumstances surrounding their daughter's death.
TORONTO, ON, June 20, 2008 (LifeSiteNews.com) - The Farlows tried to focus on funeral arrangements.
"Within days, I sensed that something wasn't right," relates Annie's mother, Barbara Farlow. "I didn't think that the decision-making process was appropriate. How could it be that we were told Annie's trachea was fine and she had pneumonia in the emergency department, and then 24 hours later this diagnosis had been reversed in the ICU? We had been exhausted, and I felt that we had been forced to make a decision in a coercive and inappropriate manner."...

...After two hours of reviewing the records on her dining room table, the nurse turned to Mrs. Farlow and said, "I'm sorry, but what happened wasn't right." Hours before Annie's death, a "do not resuscitate" order had been placed in Annie's records, without her parents' knowledge or consent....(more)

IDF trains for battle that may lie ahead

From Doctorbulldog:
A quick read. Israel knows once iran falls its proxies will attack them. They are getting ready. It matters little if Israel is attacked or is forced to invade its dirtbag neighbors a butt stomp is coming.
By ABE SELIG, 19 June, 2008, JPOSTA warm dawn haze lifted over the desert, but the moon was still out, and it dimly lit a group of soldiers in the distance - dots of green against the dark, barren landscape - charging silently towards the village.
Within minutes the silence was shattered. Gunfire, smoke and the low boom of grenade explosions echoed through the early morning, as regular infantry outfits mixed with occasional long-haired reservists advanced on their targets, yelling out commands.
“Cover me, I’m moving ahead!” yelled one private, lifting himself up from the ground and bee-lining to a small house on the village outskirts. His comrades followed, one after the other, as rays of sunlight and the neon green light of mosque minarets began to better illuminate the scene ..

Comic Relief

George Carlin was a funny guy. I like some of his stuff, "why do they lock gas station bathrooms? do they think someone might clean them?" Funny stuff. And it is really no surprise that the article in the newspaper concentrated on his pushing the boundaries of comedy and language. Everyone loves a bad boy, I guess.
"The whole problem with this idea of obscenity and indecency, and all of these things — bad language and whatever — it's all caused by one basic thing, and that is: religious superstition," Carlin told the AP in a 2004 interview. "There's an idea that the human body is somehow evil and bad and there are parts of it that are especially evil and bad, and we should be ashamed. Fear, guilt and shame are built into the attitude toward sex and the body. ... It's reflected in these prohibitions and these taboos that we have."
No, Mr Carlin, you are wrong. There is no idea out there that the human body is somehow evil and bad or that parts are especially bad and we should be ashamed. In fact, we "superstitious" Christians proclaim it "good" even very good, because God called it thus. But also claim limits on it's use and abuse and overuse. The fear, guilt and shame spring naturally from the misuse of God's gift. We instill prohibitions, or would, to restrain our appetites and thus save us from ourselves and for the good which God has for us ordained. I hope you have now relearned this.
May God have mercy on you and on us.

Amazing 70-year-old color photos

Great depression era pics over at Mental Floss, oh yeah, in COLOR...too cool.
.... the Library of Congress has just created a Flickr page, on which they’ve posted nearly 2,000 color slides — many of them hauntingly beautiful. The photographers worked for the Farm Security Administration and the Office of War Information, for whom many famous black-and-white pictures were taken around the same time (the iconic “Migrant Mother,” for instance).
But rather than sending you off to pick through thousands of these photos on Flickr — something of a laborious process — we’ve compiled our favorites here. These are portraits almost as compelling as “Migrant Mother,” but even more vivid — almost hyper-real — for their eye-popping color. (In fact, they hardly seem like historical photos at all.) For whatever reason, they’ve remained obscure until now, and we thought they deserved a little extra attention.

The Politics of a Terrorist Attack

From the AmSpec Blog:
McCain strategist Charlie Black's statement in a Fortune interview that another terrorist attack on U.S. soil "would be a big advantage" for McCain was certainly a boneheaded one to make publicly, but Jim Geraghty assumes that Black's underlying assertion is obviously true. I'm not so sure. Geraghty's correct that a terrorist attack would shift the debate back to national security, which is McCain's strong suit. However, the debate won't necessarily get framed in a way that's favorable for McCain. If there were another attack, Obama could point to it as the ultimate proof that the "Bush-McCain" policies have failed ...(More)

A Message for St. John's Day

From the MereComments Blog at Touchstone:
Today, June 24, being the Feast of the Birth of John the Baptist, here's a bit of European gloom and doom having to do with prophecy and the end of the world in 2012.
John the Baptist, who needs him? Jesus, asks Europe, who needs him? We're secular, we're proud, we're spiritual on our own terms, the latest fashion being a genuflection before the wisdom of the Aztecs or some other non-Christian religion that demands nothing but child-sacrifice. Now if was not given for even the Son of Man to know the day or the hour, how did this knowledge about 2012 come to the demons?

Senior Curial Cardinal says Humanae Vitae Was a "Defense of the Dignity of Women

Brownouts On The Way

From Forbes:
What happens when you don't build more power plants? Get ready for spiking electricity rates, brownouts and even blackouts as demand soars
If you think runaway oil prices are upsetting, just wait for what's in store for electricity. Similar forces are in play. Demand is rising fast; supply is not. The cost to get coal and natural gas out of the ground is going up, and to that expense must be added the cost of the carbon permits that Congress and the presidential candidates are contemplating. Environmentalists are getting power plants scotched. China is sucking up energy. Leave such dynamics in play long enough, and price spikes in electricity follow. But that's just the beginning. We may be facing brownouts (voltage reductions) and even rolling blackouts

Obama's "Typical White Person" Ad

From the Spectator Blog:
Barack Obama has launched his first general election ad, prominently featuring his white mother and grandparents, including his grandmother who he once described as a "typical white person" after publicly outing her as a racist during the Jeremiah Wright controversy. The ad boasts that his mother and grandparents taught him "values straight from the Kansas heartland where they grew up." Even liberal blogger Matt Yglesias calls the ad "hilariously unsubtle." Clearly, Obama is trying to convey to white working class voters who eluded him in the primaries that he loves America, and white people. The ad will air in 18 states, including many red states that Obama hopes to win: Alaska, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Iowa, Indiana, Michigan, Missouri, Montana...

George Neumayr on the "Summer of Gay Marriage"

From InsightScoop:
Writing for American Spectator, the editor of Catholic World Report reflects on California's March to Same-Sex Marriage (Sponsored by the California's Supreme Court) and notes that "the opposition to gay marriage seems depressingly wan,
as a note of agnosticism about the immorality of homosexual behavior saps its drive. The case against gay marriage ultimately rests on the natural moral law, but Republicans and conservatives seem to consider that too passe or embarrassing to be useful in the debate. Yet without that philosophical basis, the case against gay marriage appears arbitrary and strained. (more)
QUEBEC CITY, JUNE 20, 2008 (Zenit.org).- Christianity is a dynamic movement that cuts off an unjust society at the roots, said Cardinal Telesphore Toppo.
The cardinal, who is archbishop of Ranchi, India, affirmed this today at the 49th International Eucharistic Congress, which is being held through Sunday in Quebec.
The Indian prelate spoke of the Eucharist and the Church's mission. He noted that the Church, from the beginning, moved toward liberating mankind from "selfishness and exploitation, [...] the root of the unjust society."
"All were meant to equal in the believing community and this was symbolized by the Eucharistic meal," he said. "This was not an easy ideal to be reached. This was a spirituality developed in the midst of the ordinary everyday life with its daily struggles and, at that time also, in the midst of contestation and persecution. Ordinary men and women lived this Christian spirituality and began the process of building a new society, a new human family as envisaged by Jesus Christ.

British Forces Now Using “Vacuum” Missile in Afghanistan

From the UK Times:
British forces in Afghanistan have used one of the world’s most deadly and controversial missiles to fight the Taliban.
Apache attack helicopters have fired the thermobaric weapons against fighters in buildings and caves, to create a pressure wave which sucks the air out of victims, shreds their internal organs and crushes their bodies.
The Ministry of Defence (MoD) has admitted to the use of the weapons, condemned by human rights groups as “brutal”, on several occasions, including against a cave complex.
The use of the Hellfire AGM-114N weapons has been deemed so successful they will now be fired from RAF Reaper unmanned drones controlled by “pilots” at Creech air force base in Nevada, an MoD spokesman added. (

All Christians should support Church in Middle East

Vatican, Jun. 19, 2008 (CWNews.com) - The ancient Christian communities of the Middle East must be " supported by the entire Catholic Church," Pope Benedict XVI (bio - news) said in a June 19 talk to participants in an annual conference of ROACO, the Aid Agencies for the Oriental Churches.
The Holy Father mentioned his concern for the Chaldean Catholics of Iraq, where Archbishop Paulos Faraj Raho died in February after being kidnapped outside his cathedral in Mosul. The Christian minority in Iraq has been subjected to frequent violence and intimidation.
The Pope also mentioned Lebanon, where a recent political accord suggests that the country may have "found the path of dialogue and understanding." Christians there still need help as they strive to be "a sign of the real possibility for peaceful and constructive coexistence," he said. Pope Benedict said that he hopes the beatification of Father Jacques Ghazir Haddad in Lebanon this Sunday, June 22, would "touch the hearts of young Lebanese."

THE BUBBLE POPS-'WARMING' HYSTERIA FIZZLES

From the NY Post:
June 20, 2008 -- RARELY has so much hectoring produced so little.
After all the magazine covers, celebrity sermonizing and UN-certified-expert hand-wringing, the fight against global warming got a real-world test in the US Senate a few weeks ago in the debate over a proposal to limit carbon emissions through a cap-and-trade system.
After a small dose of the argument, the proposal's backers couldn't wait to drop it. It was leading opponent Mitch McConnell, the Republican Senate minority leader, who declared he'd be happy to talk about cap-and-trade for a month. ...

...Finally, there's the global-cooling spell. The world hasn't been warming since 1998, and an article in the journal Nature says warming won't pick up again until 2015. Since global warming is a long-term trend, a decade-long or more stall in temperatures doesn't mean much - except that environmentalists have banked so much politically on whipping up hysteria based on imminent catastrophe.
The stall in temperatures shows how little we know about global warming. It means that the .3 degrees Celsius increase in global temperatures predicted during the next decade by the UN's much-vaunted Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change may not happen.

Islamic Saudi Hate Academy

FrontPage reports:
In Saudi Arabia, teaching hatred for others is a normal everyday scholastic activity. But what happens when that teaching gets transferred to the United States? One children’s school with branches in Virginia, the Islamic Saudi Academy, has managed to accomplish this with hate-filled texts, a terror-linked website, and students and school personnel that have been involved in radical activity.
The Islamic Saudi Academy (ISA), an institution run by the government of Saudi Arabia, has been occupying northern Virginia, since 1984. Within the state, it has two facilities, one in Fairfax (pre-K – first grade) and one in Alexandria (grades 2 – 12). The school offers all of the standard curriculum: Math, English, Social Studies, Science, etc. However, what has been of concern to many is the group’s religious studies.
