That All May Be Saved - Why We Still Must Pray for the Jews

...Whatever his view of other faiths, the Christian by definition believes that it is better to know, love, and follow Jesus in this world than not to, and that this is true for every single person on earth. This is, indeed, the basis not only for evangelization but for all preaching, all pastoral work, all spiritual direction, because while St. Paul tells us that the veil has been removed from those who are in Christ, he also reminds us that we see through a glass darkly. We only ask for our Jewish friends what we ask, in a different sense, for ourselves... (read the whole thing here)

Is the Rev. Wright Right?

From the American Spectator:
One of Wright's dependable mantras is that America is a country controlled by "rich, white people," who, according to him, are doing harm to people of color. To a certain extent this is true. There is a large group of people for whom it is politically expedient to keep blacks in "their place."But these rich white folks -- let's call them limousine liberals -- are those who support Barack Obama and the Democratic Party. The Rest of the Story

You read the headlines: "A Pentagon-funded study of the documents failed to find a direct link between Saddam and al Qaeda."
But very few went on to tell the rest of the story. The Washinton Times did:

Newly declassified documents show a number of links between the Iraqi government of Saddam Hussein and violent terrorist or Islamist groups, many of them dating from the early 1990s...it did establish Iraqi support for Egyptian Islamic Jihad, whose leader Ayman al-Zawahri merged the group with al Qaeda years later.

If it walks like a duck, quacks like a duck... does it really matter if it calls itself by another name?

(Former) Muslim author:" the root of evil is innate in an Islam that is physiologically violent and historically conflictual."

Baptized on Easter

VATICAN CITY (Reuters) - A Muslim author and critic of Islamic fundamentalism who was baptized a Catholic by Pope Benedict said on Sunday Islam is "physiologically violent" and he is now in great danger because of his conversion.
"I realize what I am going up against but I will confront my fate with my head high, with my back straight and the interior strength of one who is certain about his faith," said Magdi Allam.

The U.S. Election Season: Security Challenges and Conventional Wisdom

From Stratfor:
Conventional wisdom holds that Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama, as an African-American, is under a greater threat than either his Democratic opponent Hillary Clinton or Republican candidate John McCain. But a close look at the rhetoric on many radical white racist Web sites suggests that all three candidates are at risk. (full analysis)

Homosexuals Risking Your Life to Impose Their Agenda

...Joe Solmonese, president of the so-called Human Rights Campaign (HRC), the nation’s largest and most radical homosexual pressure group.
Solmonese recently placed politics over science, falsely
declaring this commonsense public health precaution to be “discriminatory.” He has called for the ban to be lifted, with the wildly irresponsible claim that, “[T]here is no medical or scientific rationale for this discriminatory policy.” ...(article here)

Some Wicked Friends of Public Schools

...What happened in the 1930s in Nazi Germany, however, was preceded by what happened in Oregon in 1922. The Ku Klux Klan supported and passed the Compulsory Education Law which required that parents send their children to public schools and not private schools. The avowed purpose of this law was to get children "while their minds are plastic" and to turn the child into "a true American."... (article here)

The Islamists' Nemesis

From FrontPage Mag
...Some in Europe have accused the Dutch politician of being a provocateur, of deliberately provoking the Muslim umma to violence. But this characterization distorts what is in fact a serious purpose. What Wilders wants to reveal, above all, is that the violence is already an innate part of the umma. Besides Muslim intolerance, the Dutchman is also standing up to the moral feebleness of some of his own countrymen, whom he has called "cowards." Every television network in Holland has refused to run his film, leaving only the Internet, where Fitna will probably be posted on YouTube.... full article here

Dutch film to slam Islam

BRUSSELS — Europe's uneasy relationship with its Muslim minority faces another blow next month, when Dutch politician Geert Wilders releases a 15-minute film that compares Islam to Nazism and communism.
The film is called "Fitna," an Arabic term for "discord." It intersperses verses of the Koran with footage of terrorist attacks and other Islamist-inspired violence.
"The film will show that the Koran isn't a dead work, but the face of Islam — a tremendous hazard," Mr. Wilders told the daily newspaper NRC Handelsblad.
He said the film calls the Koran "the latest test to Western democracies since Nazism and communism."
Mr. Wilders said the film will be finished tomorrow and will be posted on a Web site, www.fitnathemovie.com, when it airs on television

Dems to hammer McCain for '100 years'

What he said:
...“We've been in South Korea ... we’ve been in Japan for 60 years,” he continued. “We’ve been in South Korea for 50 years or so. That would be fine with me. As long as Americans are not being injured or harmed or wounded or killed, that’s fine with me. I hope that would be fine with you, if we maintain a presence in a very volatile part of the world where Al Qaeda is training, recruiting and equipping and motivating people every single day." ... This is certainly not what you'd expect if carbon dioxide is driving temperature because carbon dioxide levels have been increasing but temperatures have actually been coming down over the last 10 years.
"The head of the IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) has actually acknowledged it."...

Rare Shot

A rare wild jaguar seen and photographed in the United States by hunter Warner Glenn is bayed by hounds during a hunting trip at an unknown location in southwestern New Mexico, February 20, 2006. Glenn and other members of his hunting party caught the hounds and led them away after they cornered the jaguar. The male jaguar, which weighed around 200 pounds, left the site at a slow trot unharmed. Jaguars are extremely rare in the United States, and Glenn is believed to be the only person to have encountered and photographed one in the wild.

Holding a Wolf by the Ears- Iraq five years on

...Mr Obama makes much of his opposition to those (such as his Democratic rival) who authorised the invasion in the first place. Many voters like his anti-war stance; his broad promise to end the war is popular too. He says that he would get troops out by the end of 2009. But Democratic peaceniks might cheer less heartily at some of the details of his plan. He would withdraw one or two combat brigades from Iraq each month, thus keeping American troops present in large numbers for a long time yet. Even after that, he says he would leave soldiers to protect America’s embassy, to fight al-Qaeda where necessary, and that he would “reserve the right” to re-enter Iraq to stop a genocide.... Good Friday

Posted over at Touchstone, texts from the Lention Triodion of the Orthodox Church:

Let us praise Him who was crucified upon the Tree between the thieves, and whose life-giving side was pierced by the lance: and let us bless and exalt Him about all for ever.

How great is Thy compassion! For Thou hast endured the Cross, the nails, the lance, O Lord, for my sake, who am condemned to corruption. Therefore I sing Thy praises, O Christ.

Knowing that Thy power is infinite and Thy Crucifixion voluntary, the hosts of angels were amazed. How wast Thou, upon whom none may look, scourged in the flesh, in Thy desire to redeem man from corruption? Therefore we cry unto Thee as Giver of Life: Glory to Thy Kingdom, O Christ.

The Cross was set up on the earth, and touched the heaven; not because the wood would reach so high, but because Thou who wast crucified upon it fillest all things: Glory be to Thee.

Thou hast redeemed us from the curse of the law by Thy precious Blood; nailed to the Cross and pierced by the spear, Thou has poured forth immortality upon mankind. O our Savior, glory be to Thee!

Empty Churches & the Dull Dogma of Christianity?

From the Kairos Journal, an article by Dorothy L. Sayers (1893 – 1957):
..It is the dogma that is the drama—not beautiful phrases, nor comforting sentiments, nor vague aspirations to loving-kindness and uplift, nor the promise of something nice after death—but the terrifying assertion that the same God who made the world, lived in the world and passed through the grave and gate of death. Show that to the heathen, and they may not believe it; but at least they may realize that here is something that man might be glad to believe.. (full article here)

The Agony

Philosophers have measured mountains,
Fathomed the depths of seas, of states, and kings,
Walked with a staff to heaven, and traced fountains:
But there are two vast, spacious things
The which to measure it doth more behoove:
Yet few there are that sound them: Sin and Love.
Who would know Sin, let him repair
Unto Mount Olivet; there shall he see
A man so wrung with pains that all his hair,
His skin, his garments bloody be.
Sin is that press and vice, that forceth pain
To hunt his cruel food through every vein.
Who knows not Love, let him assay
And taste that juice, which on the cross a pike
Did set again abroach; then let him say
If ever he did taste the like.
Love is that liquor sweet and most divine
Which my God feels as blood; but I, as wine.

Big Truths for Little Kids (and big ones)

From the National Catholic Register:

Why is there so much war in the world?
This may seem strange, but it’s because people are hungry for the happiness of God, and try to get it in wrong ways.
If that sounds crazy, it’s because it is. Sin is basically crazy. Sin means putting yourself before God.

"...So God sending his only begotten son to die once and for all such that the walls of hostility that has existed between God and men be broken. He did it for once to save mankind from sin.

Why did Jesus allow his enemies to capture him?

From Seattle:
Why did Jesus deliberately put Himself in the way of harm, when He knew His enemies were planning to put Him on trial and kill Him? Wouldn't it have been better for Him to go into hiding, or something like that? (more)
From the Manila Bulletin:
In his gospel, John’s recounting of Jesus’ passion ended with the cry, "Tetelestai" (Jn 19:30), a Greek word which meant "It is finished, consummated or completed." What astonishing irony. Was there anything apparently less finished than this story? Jesus’ body hanging on the cross left the passersby who knew Him totally hanging in the air. Jesus died claiming that God had in fact had the last word. But God seemed utterly silent on the cross. No spirit like a dove descended. No supernatural light of transfiguration. No voice from heaven. (more)
